He served as bishop of the Diocese of Saginaw in Michigan from 1980 until his death in 2004. WebOn March 4, 1968, Pope Paul VI appointed Gumbleton as an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Detroit and titular bishop of Ululi. He was consecrated on May 1, 1968, by Archbishop John Dearden.
